چکیده

introduced into the United States, and black wattle (Acacia mearnsii), a species native to Australia that was introduced to South Africa. In response to criticism from environmental and natural resource conservation communities (e.g., Olson and Knopf 19867), many US federal agencies and nongovernmental organizations turned from nonindigenous species to species native to North America for use in con servation planting programs. Although this change has merit, indiscriminant use of native species might pose risk comparable to using exotic species where encroachment by native woody species might also result in altered ecosystem structure and function.

Duck Productivity in Restored Species-Rich Native and Species-Poor Non-Native Plantings

Conservation efforts to increase duck production have led the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to restore grasslands with multi-species (3-5) mixtures of introduced cool season vegetation often termed dense nesting cover (DNC). The effectiveness of DNC to increase duck production has been variable, and maintenance of the cover type is expensive. In an effort to decrease the financial and...

Not All Kinds of Revegetation Are Created Equal: Revegetation Type Influences Bird Assemblages in Threatened Australian Woodland Ecosystems

The value for biodiversity of large intact areas of native vegetation is well established. The biodiversity value of regrowth vegetation is also increasingly recognised worldwide. However, there can be different kinds of revegetation that have different origins. Are there differences in the richness and composition of biotic communities in different kinds of revegetation? The answer remains unk...

Growth, Development and Yield in Pure and Mixed Forest Stands

Objective: Ecosystems with mixed species compared to the ones with pure compositions provide a broader range of options in the fields of biodiversity, conservation, protection and restoration. Nearly all forest plantations are established as monocultures, but research has shown that there are potential advantages to be gained by using carefully designed species mixtures in place of monocultures...

Biodiversity Futures under Alternative Forest Industry Scenarios in North Queensland

North Queensland is a major repository of biodiversity in Australia. From the perspective of industry proponents, the impacts of plantation developments on biodiversity deserve consideration because these impacts are likely to influence public acceptance of proposals and whether proposals can attract environmentally-linked funding and marketing opportunities. At the same time, plantations offer...
